Someone Else's Term Project Presentation

The project I would like to talk about is Matthew’s project on Peer to Peer file sharing. In his presentation, the explained the immoral and immoral issues related to peer to peer file sharing. He gave details about who the information is transferred through the files and also why people use this site. The ways he explained the different point of view of people, artists and recording companies was also well prepared. In addition, he clarified how the P2P is related to new media and what is motivation behind the use of P2P. Overall, I found the presentation was well organized and entertaining. I feel he did a decent job with his presentation and the way he set up all the information he shared with us. It was clear, concise and interesting.

The Next New Thing

I do not know what will be the next thing is going to be, but I think maybe if we have an online interview by using some new technology. As far as I think, most people are afraid and get nervous when they go to an interview. Having face to face conversations make us nervous, especially if we having an interview first time. It will be very helpful for applicant if a company uses virtual worlds or some other new media to have first and/or second interview online and after that meet with candidate personally.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

In our class wiki, I am working as contributor for New Media in Entertainment. I added some information about online social networking. The wiki page had little information about online social networking but I felt that was not enough to explain what is mean by. I provided some more information like what social networking offer to individuals and what are some examples of online networks. Also I included information about virtual worlds that it allows users to create avatars of themselves or anything they want to be in virtual worlds. While I was doing the research, I found that the virtual worlds enable a company to do several things so I created a new point about “the need for a corporation”. Corporations can provide a meeting place, engage in v-commerce and build organizational experience in a virtual environment.

About My Term Project

My presentation is about social networking and purposeful loss of privacy. Social networking are sites that individual use to interact and communicate with one another. Individual create an online profile and share the information within the sites. Users post unnecessary information and share too much information on these sites which someone can download and use it however and whenever they want. Also employers are using these sites to learn about prospective employees. Social networking sites provide a privacy statement about the limit of protection but do not guarantee that the information posted on these sites will not viewed by any unauthorized person.
Users should create a limited profile and use the privacy setting, so they have more control on their personal information. Also avoid to post everything online because once its posted online, its public and anyone can access to it now and in the future. Do not add anyone as your friend if you do not know about that person. I think social networking is a great tool to stay in touch with your friends and family but you have to be careful about what you post. Social networks are great fun and can be advantageous but people really need to understand that its complicated world and you need to step wisely.

Privacy and confidentiality

Privacy and confidentiality are major issues of new media. When it comes to social networking sites, privacy and confidentiality have always been fundamental issue. Facebook is one of the targeted social networks with privacy and confidentiality concerns. People usually post unnecessary information on these sites which can be used against them. New media helps us to be advanced in some ways but we are not aware of the risks that we are putting ourselves into. I think the best way to protect ourselves on social networks is to put as little personal information as possible. Also social networking sites provide security settings, so make sure to use those settings to protect the information you post online. I think we always have to make sure that we do not put anything on internet that we would not want others to know it because anyone can access through Google or other search engines. Be careful when it comes to publishing personal and private information on social networking sites.

Advice to Baruch College

My advice to Baruch College is to starts to utilize new media by including online lecture. In Baruch if you miss the class for some reasons, you are in trouble especially if you have no friend there. I am not saying that student should not come to class. Baruch should keep the attendance policy. It’s only for students who can not come to college for some specific reason and this will be very helpful to all students at Baruch. I think it will be more helpful if Baruch College should have video lecture for some courses like math, accounting, etc. This way student can repeat the lecture and do well in these courses. I believe by doing this Baruch College can improve their students education quality if they use the online lecture through new media.
Also Baruch College has to start the professor’s evaluation online. Why de we have to cut the time from classes and waste paper on professor’s evaluations when it can be easily done online. Baruch College gets the result more quickly about evaluation and the result is also available to students fast.
Last but not least, Baruch has to improve Blackboard. Blackboard is the main platform for Baruch to be in touch with their students and professors also use Blackboard to post the information like power point slides and exams information. But most of the time, Blackboard goes under construction and is unavailable just when students need it.

My New Media Class - So Far

In this class we have viewed many forms of new media. New media technologies include blogs, wikis, twitter, second life, etc. The class notes introduced some technologies that I was not aware of like mashup, twitter and second life. Also I have learned that the new media gives many people an opportunity to communicate on a different level and encourage collaboration and information sharing between users.
The internet plays a great role in new media because it connects people from all over the world. In order for everyone to use new media, they must have access to the internet. Another way that the internet is helping people is through community blogs that can help fight crime like the one mention in the article, “Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid”.
New media is enhancing old media with its new technologies. In the past, people watch their shows on the television but now they can watch them online through internet. Now there are many websites like Hulu.com where you can watch your favorite shows the next day if you missed it or even watch the same episode if you like in a few hours after it is broadcast on the television.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Second Life allows users to create avatars of themselves or anything they want to be in virtual worlds. The users can design any characters they want to be. They can develop an avatar to either be completely identical to their present personality or create someone else. In virtual worlds, people are able to do or accomplish things that they may never able to do in their lifetime. For example, the disabled, that are not do certain things because of their disability, are able to do whatever they want which they could not do in their current state. The users can be experience more then what is available to them in reality. The avatars can do anything like fly.
According to the article, “IBM’s Virtual Worlds for its Employees” IBM uses this technology among its employees. The purpose of the company to gives its employees the training such as signing for benefit, developing codes and sales skills. The virtual worlds help to cut costs in the areas such as training, which can be held on IBM’s version of Second Life.
The dark side to Virtual worlds site is that the users will become addicted and rarely get off from the site. Also it is not good to spent time on these sites because users lost the interactions in their real life. In addition, some people start to believe someone else and trying to run away from their own being.
This technology might evolve into training programs for many other national and international companies, much like IBM’s program. Having virtual worlds, the employees get ready for the work in much quick way. The companies can also use virtual worlds to give an indication of how the end product may look like.

Twitter

Twitter is a social networking site, which I have heard it before but never use it. It is basically the status update feature similar on facebook. I just signed for twitter for this class but I do not like it a lot. I personally feel that the range of 140 characters is so annoying. Sometime it makes hard you to express what you want to say. Also it is not as convenient as other social networks to see the comments about your post from the other users.
The similarity between Bb discussion and Twitter is that they are both limited to the register users. However, to reply on the Bb discussion is mush easier than the twitter. Twitter does not have the option to reply underneath the post. Also Bb discussion is more private because it’s only allow the register user to see whether Twitter is much more public because the updates you make can be seen by anyone with the internet connection. I think twitter is more useful for breaking news like an airplane landing on the Hudson.
The difference between twitter and in-class discussion is that in-class discussion is face-to-face discussion where you get the reply fast. If you send the post on twitter, you have to wait until the person read your post.

Social Networking

Social networking can be used to stay connected with your friends, make new friends, get socialize, share ideas and join groups with similar interest. Through social networking, people get awareness to specific issues. Social networking is also very useful in corporative level where you can get connected with business people and get information related to your field. People make connection through ordinary blogs and postings. Instead of personal interaction, Social networking can be used for business. I think these networks very helpful to small business that do not have budget to do an advertisement at high level. They can use twitter, facebook, myspace and many other social sites to post their product information.
Social networking is helping you to know and talk with others which would not be possible in the real life. It helps people to keep up-to-date with anything around the world because you can have friends all over the world. Social networking also brings diversity because the internet gives individuals from all around the world to accesses to networking sites. Through social networking people get information about other religious and new languages. According to the article, “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting” by Frank Langfitt, social networking helps people to find jobs. For example, Linkedin is a social network, where users post their resume and other relevant information so they can get chance to hired by a company or get notice in certain industry.
With so my positive things, social networking has some negative aspect. Some people use social networking to get personal information of somebody and then spread it all over or use to harm them. Sometime these kinds of cases get more serious and bring very bad consequences. Other thing that I found is that some people become addicted to some social sites and spend a lot of time which they can spend on their studies or work. Also employers use social sites to find about some applicants and screen existing employees, so be careful what you post on social networking sites.

Check Out Social Networking Sites

There are many social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Friendster, which people use for communication, collaboration, and creativity. I personally have an account on Facebook. I think Facebook is one of the famous social networks that people use. I heard about Myspace but never thought to make an account on it. Most of my friends are on Facebook. I like to use Facebook because it is simple and easy to use. Facebook is getting popular all over the world so it is easy to search to see if my old friends are available on Facebook. Facebook is very helpful to be in touch with friends and share your pictures with them. I have looked at other websites such as Myspace, Friendster, etc. I think Facebook, Myspace, and Friendster have similar features. On each site, the profile contains your picture, basic information about yourself, interests and comment wall. The Friendster is little different from other because it has a blog feature and Myspace has an option to change the layout. Facebook is more used by college students where Myspace is for more teenagers.

Blogs Vs Wikis

Blogs are posts that made on the website. Blogs is kind on personal diary, which is maintained and monitored by an individual, where a person can post news, ideas, pictures and videos. On the blogger, person posts their original opinion and leave readers to respond with their opinion. Wikis are a website that grows with the information. Anyone can contribute information on the web page by editing or adding more relevant information. Wikis are broader than blogs because anyone can accesses to it and contribute and modify content.

Blogs and wikis are different in the way they structure information. Blog posts are in reverse chronological order where the recent post shows at top. Wikis are typically organized by subject matter into a relatively stable hierarchy. Blogs grow linearly, post by post, where wikis grow geometrically as each area is added. Wikis are more open to public while blogs are limited to the author or identified groups. Blogs and wikis, both are new media mediums and both are very popular in nowadays. Anyone can create a blog or a wiki page and both have free access. Also, both wikis and blogs allow the users to link its page to other websites.

Convergence is very important in today’s world. New media can have different function but they all are connected through internet. The internet connects the user and gives them the ability to be more efficient in their work. Blogs are used for collaboration in which the creator of the blog can have links to other blogs that share the similar ideas. Reader can leave comments on post or also share additional information providing links to websites that relates with the blog entries. According to the article, “Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid” the community find out about event, which was happing in the neighborhood through blogs, is a great example of the use of collaboration in blogs.

Old Vs New Media

Old media is a web 1.0, a very much a one way street. Old media is an old way to transfer information such as radio, television and newspaper where new media is a new way to transfer information. New media is web 2.0 which allows people to interact with each other. A new way to exchange information is bloggers, podcasts, social networks and other interactive websites. Old media news defined by newspaper, radio and television, in which distributor and editor control the part of news. With new media, news can be gathered from many different sources such as bloggers.

The entertainment industry has also been greatly affected by new media technology. New media is taking over the television, which is part of the old media, through internet. Most of the people like to see their shows over the internet anytime and anywhere they want. Nowadays, most new media has an important connection with Internet such as online dictionary instead of paper dictionary. People like to use e-mail instead of using envelop to mail out the letter because it is more convenient and quick.

What is New Media?

New media is a basic term of the many different forms of electronic communication that are made possible through the use of computer technology. New media technologies involve wikipedia, social networking, facebook, youtube, blogs etc. In the article, “Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid”, in the New York Times, a group of seven people who met through the blogs brought the case to the attention of the community and police authorities. A group of people who did not know each other come together and all this happen because of new media.
The internet is the biggest source of new media because it is where new media was invented and where it is currently expanding. The internet serves as a host of new media because websites that support new media like Blogger are based on the internet. In order for everyone to use new media they must have access to the internet. New media is winning over the old media such as newspapers and television. Most of the people choose to watch the TV shows on the internet, instead of television and also read the article on the internet.
